Abstract
This chapter presents the architecture and design of Enki, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for learning programming languages on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and blended learning courses. Enki integrates a central gamification service to boost student motivation, alongside pedagogical services for code evaluation, diagram assessment, and learning resource sequencing. The chapter details the design decisions, component interactions, RESTful integration interfaces, and user experience considerations for delivering a gamified, browser-based coding platform tailored to novice programmers.
