Abstract

Expressive writing—writing about emotional experiences—has been shown to yield significant physical and psychological health benefits. However, the precise autonomic mechanisms underlying these benefits remain an active area of study. This paper investigates heart rate variability (HRV) as a physiological marker of emotional regulation and autonomic nervous system activation during expressive writing tasks. By combining continuous ECG monitoring with real-time handwriting logging, we measure time-domain and frequency-domain HRV metrics across baseline, writing, and recovery phases.
